Current Developments in Cognition and Behavior III

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

The main aim of this course is to analyze the cognitive processes related to memory and attention from the perspective of embodied cognition. We will study how cognitive agents learn sensorimotor associations during embodied interactions with the environment. In the specific case of human beings, how learning happens even before birth and how it is refined and made more complex throughout ontogenetic development will be discussed. We will review different attentional mechanisms and their close relationship with memory, as well as the bidirectional influence of action and these processes. The importance of understanding these cognitive processes as embodied, situated in a context, and grounded in a world will be analyzed. Finally, recent ideas about minimal cognition and basal cognitive processes will be studied, particularly, in unicellular organisms, plants, and body organs.

Life cycle of human development

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

In this course, we will review a comprehensive and complete perspective of the life cycle of human development. The main aim is to analyze the concepts, factors, and characteristics of human development from a scientific perspective,  in order to study the biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional processes from conception, adolescence, adulthood, to death.

Current Developments in Cognition and Behavior I

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

The content of this course is intended to understand how perceptual and cognitive processes interact to give meaning to what is perceived in a given context. At the end of this course, students will be able to understand perception as an adaptive mechanism that allows successful interactions with the environment to maintain their homeostatic states to survive.

Current Developments in Cognition and Behavior III

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

The main aim of this course is to analyze the processes related to memory and attention from the perspective of embodied cognition. At the end of the course, the student will understand memory and attention as embodied cognitive processes situated in a context. At the same time, she will be able to analyze cognition from different perspectives such as embodied cognition, developmental robotics, and basal cognitive processes. This course will allow students to study cognition beyond a purely brain-centrist vision and propose novel methods for research in Embodied Cognitive Sciences.

2021 - Second term

Current Developments in Cognition and Behavior II

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

In this course, we will study cognition from an embodied, embedded, enactive, extended, and affective perspective (4EA cognition). We will analyze why cognition is not only embodied, it is also grounded in the physical properties of the world, and situated in a context. At the same time, we will study the theory of predictive processing, which attempts to unify perception, action, and cognition under the same explanatory framework, and it is considered one of the most recent theories about embodied cognition.

Learning and Adaptive Behavior I

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

The main aim of this course is to analyze and understand behavior as a result of several mechanisms that favor adaptation. Special emphasis will be placed on the understanding of perception and cognition as being at the service of action. The practices of the course will be focused on the discussion and analysis of examples of social and ecological importance, as well as to promote the application of the content of the course in relevant topics for psychology in its different areas.

Learning and Adaptive Behavior (practices) III

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

This course is an introduction to the experimental study of human cognition. Classic experiments related to the study of perception, attention, memory, reasoning, and decision making will be reviewed. Students will learn the fundamentals of experimental design, how to run behavioral experiments, and how to make a descriptive analysis of data.  At the same time, they will develop technical skills in R as well as for writing research reports following the APA 7th edition format.

Current Developments in Cognition and Behavior I

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

The main aim of this course is to analyze perception, cognition, and behavior from exteroceptive, interoceptive, proprioceptive sensory modalities. Perceptual systems will be studied from their different afferent pathways to the processing maps in the cerebral cortex. At the same time, the distinction between distal and proximal modalities will be discussed, as well as the processing of sensory information via bottom-up and top-down. This discussion, throughout the course, aims to understand the close interaction between perception and cognition. Finally, the relevance of multimodal integration to unify and give meaning to conscious experience will be analyzed.

Learning, Motivation, and Cognition I

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

The main aim of this course is to strengthen the essential knowledge about cognitive and experimental psychology, as well as to develop skills for writing scientific manuscripts. Different cognitive and perceptual processes will be studied such as visual perception, mental simulation and its relationship with the acquisition of concepts, vicarious learning, decision making, among others. For each of the reviewed cognitive processes, students will carry out online experiments for data collection and subsequent statistical analysis. Special emphasis will be placed on the understanding of the reasons for choosing each statistical test according to the experimental design.

Models of Learning, Motivation and Cognition I

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

In this course, we study the close relationship between perception, learning, and action. We make a special emphasis on internal models, knowledge acquisition during sensorimotor interactions, sensorimotor predictions, self-consequences of action, sense of agency, sense of ownership, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation as well as different models and theories regarding the explanations of the nature of cognition.

Selected Topics in Behavior and Cognition I

Licenciatura en Psicología, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

In this course, we study the main differences between cognition and perception. We discuss the cognitive penetrability of the perceptual experience using several perceptual illusions as examples. A special emphasis will be placed on the understanding of when, why, and how sensory information is processed via bottom-up and top-down. We will then analyze different theories regarding perceptual optimization processes, such as sensory enhancement, sensory facilitation, and sensory attenuation.
